Minority MPs Boycott Parliament Business on Court Days for Colleague's Trial
Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson

The decision reflects their support for Mr. Quayson, who is facing charges of forgery, perjury, and deceiving a public officer related to his election as the Member of Parliament for Assin North.

In a show of solidarity, members of the Minority in Parliament have declared that they will not participate in the business of the House on court days for their colleague, James Gyakye Quayson.

The announcement was made by the leader of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) MPs, Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson, immediately after the swearing-in of Assin North MP, James Gyakye Quayson.

Dr. Forson stated that the entire Minority would accompany their colleague to court and refrain from engaging in parliamentary activities whenever he is scheduled for court hearings.

The decision reflects their support for Mr. Quayson, who is facing charges of forgery, perjury, and deceiving a public officer related to his election as the Member of Parliament for Assin North.

The boycott was carried out on Tuesday, July 4, in line with the court proceedings involving Mr. Quayson. The move symbolizes their commitment to stand by their colleague during this legal battle, prioritizing court appearances over parliamentary duties.

Meanwhile, Dr. Forson used the opportunity to highlight the significance of Mr. Quayson's electoral victory, describing it as a resounding message from the people of Assin North.

According to him, the outcome demonstrates that Ghanaians are disillusioned with the current Akufo-Addo government and cannot be swayed by monetary inducements or superficial projects.

Dr. Forson emphasized the need for politicians and the government to heed the people's concerns regarding economic mismanagement, poor governance, corruption, and growing hardships.
James Gyakye Quayson was officially sworn in as the Member of Parliament for Assin North after winning the by-election held on June 27.

His victory follows a Supreme Court ruling on May 17 that declared his previous election illegal and barred him from holding the position. However, he successfully reclaimed his seat in the by-election and now assumes his role as the representative of Assin North.

Mr. Quayson is currently facing charges related to his citizenship and nomination process. He has filed a motion at the High Court seeking a stay of proceedings pending an appeal. The court will consider his request, while the trial continues to unfold.

The Minority's boycott serves as a visible expression of support for Mr. Quayson during this critical period, highlighting their commitment to justice and their colleague's legal rights.
